In his theory, Woods points out how children 10 and under in Pokemon are given starter Pokemon and sent out on their own with no adult supervision. “How many of those kids actually make it to the first gym and get their first badge? And how many of those kids are just rotting away in tall grass because Pokemon did them in? We don’t talk about that, do we?” Woods then brought up the possibility that going out on a Pokemon adventure is the Pokemon universe’s way of population control, likening it to Battle Royale and The Hunger Games.

“Is that the point? To quell the population because there’s too many people?” asks The New Day star in the video explaining his theory. Considering how unlikely it would be for children to survive for long periods of time out in the wilderness while also having to contend with super-powered monsters, it seems that there may be some legitimate argument for this theory.
Of course, the Pokemon anime series is primarily made for kids, and it rarely deals with “death” in any capacity. In fact, the main character Ash Ketchum has been the same age for decades, so it clearly does not follow the same rules that the real world does. Even so, it’s an interesting and dark theory that may offer some disturbing insight into the world of Pokemon.
In the meantime, those who are unfamiliar with Woods may be surprised that a WWE superstar is talking about Pokemon anime theories, but Xavier Woods is a well-documented gamer. He even has his own gaming YouTube channel called UpUpDownDown that has over 2 million subscribers at the time of this writing. Needless to say, if Woods ever decides to hang up his boots, he could have a meaningful career as a YouTube gamer, and maybe he’ll go more in-depth with some of his theories in the future.
