In case you didn’t know….

Finn Balor was injured at Summerslam, where also became the inaugural Universal Champion. During the match against Seth Rollins, he injured his shoulder after being power bombed against a barricade. This resulted in him having to relinquish the Universal Championship a day after winning it.

Finn Balor was estimated to be out until sometime in February, and the assumption was that he would be back for WrestleMania. However, this hasn’t been the case. Balor made his official return to the ring on March 10th at a live event in Buffalo, NY.

The heart of the matter

The Wrestling Observer Newsletter went into detail about why Finn Balor will not have a match at WrestleMania

Dave Meltzer noted on his radio show that Balor wanted to be a part of WrestleMania this year and that it was a possibility that he could be in the battle royal; but from the look of things, WWE changed their minds regarding this situation, and probably for the better.

What’s next?

Finn Balor looks set to be making his televised return on the RAW after WrestleMania. It will be fascinating to see which storyline he is a part of upon his return. Basic booking would state that he will be right back in the Universal Championship picture since he never lost the title, but since Brock Lesnar seems to be slated as the next Universal Champion, The Demon King and The Beast Incarnate may not cross paths anytime soon.

Author’s take

Holding Finn Balor back for the RAW after WrestleMania is the right move by WWE in this case. Unless they were pairing him in a match against Samoa Joe or AJ Styles, there is no point in including him as part of the battle royal.

Even a feud against those two names would have required a longer build-up. A return on the RAW after WrestleMania would put the spotlight on Finn Balor and give him the platform to move forward.
