X-Men: The Animated Series ran from October 1992 to September 1997 on Fox Kids, spanning 5 revered seasons that took on some of the heroes’ staple storylines, in turn resulting in one of the most beloved comic book adaptations to this date. With news that Marvel Studios’ X-Men ‘97 will be a reboot of the same show, interest in this ’90s relic has grown again, especially now that it’s available on Disney Plus.

Hence, it’s perfect timing to celebrate the series’ legacy, exactly like two people very close to it did this Halloween, namely Eric and Julia Lewald, who run the official site for X-Men: The Animated Series. The couple took to Twitter to post a picture of a cake bearing the iconic main poster featuring many X-Men such as Gambit, Jean Grey, Wolverine Storm, Cyclops and Rogue to mark the occasion. They also thanked fans who, to this day, continue to show their love for the series.
The Lewalds worked on the series, with Eric developing it alongside Sidney Iwanter and Mark Edens while Julia was a credited writer in many episodes. Both will be returning as consulting producers for X-Men ‘97 and their involvement will likely be key in the new animated series coming together. Lead writer Beau DeMayo recently stated it was of utmost importance to him that everyone working on X-Men ‘97 was a fan of the original, citing the disdain many of Netflix’s The Witcher writers had for the books and games as an important lesson.
Eric and Julia won’t be the only familiar faces returning for X-Men ‘97, as most of the original voice cast is also coming back, save for a few exceptions in the case of Alyson Court, who cited owing Jubilee proper Asian representation as her reason to skip the role. Funnily enough, Eric Lewald claimed he wasn’t that familiar with comic book fandom in the ’90s, but he did make sure to surround himself with people who could help his X-Men make up for that.
Disney has not announced a release date for X-Men ‘97, though the show is expected to come out near the fall of 2023. In the meantime, both the X-Men and Spider-Man animated series are compelling watches readily available for streaming.
