Not to be confused with Activision’s recently announced Silicon Knights project, X-Men Destiny, X-Men: The Arcade Game allows players to choose from Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Storm, Colossus, Cyclops, and Dazzler. The mutant of choice must battle through a load of Sentinels and various X-Men villians to rescue Professor X and Kitty Pryde. No release date or price has been announced yet. Chances are good that it will clock in around $10, though.
There have been several retro-style games popping up recently, including the recently released Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World: The Game and the forthcoming (and aptly named) Retro City Rampage. It will be interesting to see how a true classic like X-Men: The Arcade Game compares to these modern, yet nostalgic, titles.
X-Men: The Arcade Game was definitely one of my favorite games growing up as a kid. It took more than enough of my parents’ quarter and introduced me to the idea of compromise, because half the time I came up to play the game, I never got to play Wolverine, though I did start enjoying Nightcrawler. I never did get to beat the game, unfortunately, but now, I might actually be able to get a chance. As far as retro games being brought back to the consoles, I couldn’t have been more happy for this one.
Ranters, what do you think about downloadable versions of classic arcade games – are they good fun, or are they disappointing too much of the time? What other arcade classics would you like to see get the download treatment?
X-Men: The Arcade Game will be coming to XBLA and PSN sometime in the future.
