However, a new leak seems to imply that Microsoft may have a major third project in the works, with a new look into the Xbox One S’ OS revealing a mysterious project going by the name “Edinburgh.” What this mysterious code name alludes to is anyone’s guess, yet, fans are making some predictions that range from VR headsets to a full-on third next-generation Xbox model.

The code name itself was found by bllyhlbrt on Twitter, who originally posted some screenshots of the Xbox One S’ OS to show off some new mentions of project Lockhart within the files. It seems the Twitter user at first didn’t think too much on the mentions of Edinburgh in the screenshots, however, other users were quick to highlight the phrase and begin discussing what it could be referring to. Some have speculated that it could allude to some form of VR headset, others that it could reference a digital-only console in the same vein as what Sony’s cooking up for the PlayStation 5, and some even seemed adamant that it will be some sort of handheld Xbox variant.
Weighing in on the theories behind the new code name, Windows Central’s Jez Corden told fans “don’t get hyped for a handheld or new form factor or something like that, might be something like an XCloud server blade. Still, fun times innit.” As he says, the code name likely refers to something relating to Xbox’s ambitious new streaming service XCloud, which is looking to enter the same market that Google Stadia has been trying to cultivate since last year. After all, as many have mentioned, shipping three next-generation consoles would be a strange marketing strategy on Microsoft’s part, so it’s likely to refer to a digital project the company has in the works.
Regardless, it definitely adds a new wrinkle to Microsoft’s mysterious next-generation plans. Hopefully, fans will get to learn more at the company’s next-generation, first-party reveal event coming up in the next few weeks, or perhaps even at the rumored hardware showcase coming in August. Until then, players will have to keep speculating about what all these new codenames are referring to.
