Vice President of Xbox Games Marketing at Microsoft Aaron Greenberg has said this week should be a “fun week,” expressing excitement for the days to progress. Of course, many comments and fans immediately jumped to the rumors that an Xbox video game conference would be taking some time in early 2023, as Greenberg himself has seemingly teased in the past.
During The Game Awards 2022, Microsoft was notably absent from any major video game announcements. Phil Spencer was in attendance, but no Xbox games were shown or revealed via new trailers. Many expressed concern about this and how it would reflect on Xbox going into 2023, but that led directly into rumors of an Xbox-specific video game showcase. At the time, Greenberg himself stoked the flames of these rumors by tweeting that Microsoft has “a lot planned to show…incredibly exciting year ahead for 2023,” and continued to say “timing is always key, but don’t worry, you will not have to wait too long for what’s next from us.”

While it could theoretically mean anything else, reading these tweets from Greenberg and keeping in mind that these rumors hit a fever pitch over the past weekend or so, it stands to reason fans could get a showcase later this week. If this is the case, then Microsoft would likely announce the Xbox showcase date and time sometime early this week. That’s still hard to predict, but Greenberg’s tweet certainly builds hype for something. Many were worried about these rumors when the Xbox-Oreo crossover was revealed, but that now seems to be coincedental.
With Xbox not having a clearly defined 2023, there’s a lot fans could expect from such a showcase. For example, Starfield and Redfall would likely take up the most time, given those are the biggest focus for Microsoft’s 2023 pipeline. At the same time, fans could expect more Xbox Game Pass updates and, while this is tinfoil hat territory, such an event could explain why there has still not been an Xbox Game Pass announcement this month despite continued additions.
It would also be a great time to learn more concrete information about previously announced games for the subscription service, such as Hollow Knight: Silksong’s release date for Xbox Game Pass. Last year, it was confirmed to release within the first three months of this year as a day one Xbox Game Pass title, so one would imagine a big showcase would have to feature it. Though, if it didn’t, it wouldn’t be the first big showcase it seemingly skipped. But beyond that, any updates on upcoming Xbox releases would certainly be welcome.
