Toy game controllers can be a fun option for little kids, especially if they’re too young to enjoy real video games just yet. Little kids might be so inclined to “play along” on their own controller while watching their parents or siblings play the real deal, and one parent took that to the next level with their own child and a customized Xbox controller.

Reddit user and Xbox gamer Balc0ra took to the site to share a custom Xbox controller that they had designed by the Xbox Design Lab. The service lets users customize aspects of their Xbox controller, creating a custom design that’s all their own. In this case, though, the parent decided to base their new Xbox controller off of something they already owned: their child’s Fisher-Price toy game controller.
Balc0ra mimicked the Fisher-Price toy controller’s colors extremely well. The D-pad is red, thumbsticks are blue, while the underside of the controller is a bright green. Balc0ra also did their best at imitating the top of the toy controller, with orange bumper buttons and purple triggers. It’s not a completely identical match, since the Fisher-Price controller has a different layout of buttons and sticks compared to the Xbox controller, but the two are extremely similar.
Fellow gamers and parents flooded the comments with positivity, charmed at the parent’s efforts. Some shared their own stories of their children wanting to play with their real controllers. Others informed Balc0ra of the hidden Konami Code Easter egg on this particular Fisher-Price controller, which the OP hadn’t known about previously. Interestingly enough, one person previously rebuilt the same Fisher-Price toy controller to work as a real game controller.
Many gamers are now passing on the hobby with their children, even if their kids aren’t quite old enough to enjoy games intended for older players. Customizing a real controller to let their child feel more included is a cute idea, but Balc0ra did note one potential downside. Their daughter wants to play with a real Xbox controller even more now, so any other gamers following suit with their own customized controllers may see it backfire in at least this one way.
