It was previously leaked that Project Cars 2 and Fable Anniversary would be part of the Xbox Free Games with Gold for April 2020, and it turns out that leak was accurate. Project Cars 2 will be available from April 1 to April 30, whereas Fable Anniversary can be claimed from April 1 to April 15.

Meanwhile, Knights of Pen and Paper Bundle will be available for Xbox One users from April 16 to May 15. Toy Box Turbos is the other free Xbox 360 game, which will be available for Xbox Live Gold subscribers to claim from April 16 to April 30. According to a post by Xbox’s Major Nelson, the free Games with Gold amount to a total value of $132.46, though it remains to be seen how exactly fans will react to the lineup.
While Project Cars 2 earned strong reviews at the time of its release, having two racing games as part of the free Games with Gold for April 2020 may not sit well with subscribers who aren’t big into racing or sports games. Fable Anniversary, meanwhile, is a first-party Xbox game, which would usually mean that it will be a popular choice, but it’s already available to Xbox Game Pass subscribers. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate comes with the same benefits as Xbox Live Gold, so Fable Anniversary’s inclusion is a little redundant for those subscribers.
Anyone disappointed by the free Games with Gold for April 2020 should note that there is still some time to claim the free Games with Gold for March 2020. This includes Batman: The Enemy Within - The Complete Season, Sonic Generations, and Shantae: Half-Genie Hero. Xbox Live Gold subscribers have until April 1 to claim Batman: The Enemy Within - The Complete Season and Sonic Generations, but Shantae: Half-Genie Hero is available until April 15.
As Xbox Game Pass continues to grow, it seems likely that there will be more crossover games that will be redundant for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers. It will be interesting to see how much more focus Microsoft puts into Game Pass in the next-generation with the Xbox Series X, and if the free Games with Gold program is eventually phased out entirely.
