Speaking with GameSpot, the head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, confirmed that he wasn’t “a big fan” of churning out slightly upgraded hardware. Instead, Spencer clarified that he’d rather make such upgrades more substantial, presumably in a bid to prevent consumers that have invested in the hardware from feeling alienated down the road – something that could realistically happen with future software moving forward.
Spencer further clarified Xbox’s stance, stating that the current Xbox One console is doing well. Even then, he alluded to a much bigger move potentially being in the cards for the console manufacturer, if and when the time is right.
These comments aren’t all the surprising, as Phil Spencer has previously confirmed that Microsoft will indeed make another Xbox console. Even then, one has to wonder what form that will take. With reports coming in that the house of Halo could be releasing an Xbox One slim in the near future, it’s obvious that such a redesign could be a concrete means of combatting Sony’s enhanced platform initiative.
As of this writing, Sony hasn’t even confirmed the existence of its heavily rumored PlayStation 4.5 console, so Spencer is right in refusing to change the company’s game plans based on industry banters. With all of that said, it’ll be interesting to see how the next few months play out if these PlayStation upgrade reports prove to be true.
